How to Create Modern Frosted Glass UI in CSS and Tailwind
Glassmorphism — commonly recognized as the sleek “frosted glass” look popularized by Apple macOS, iOS, and Windows Fluent Design — creates a sense of lightweight transparency, modern elegance, and multi-layered depth.
When designed carefully with sufficient contrast, glassmorphic cards, navbars, and modal overlays make interfaces feel fresh and premium.
The 4 Pillars of Glassmorphism
To convince the human eye that an element is made of frosted glass, you must combine four distinct CSS properties:
1. Translucent Background
The element’s background color must be semi-transparent, typically using rgba() with opacity between 5% and 25%:
background: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0.12);
2. Backdrop Filter (The Frosting Effect)
The magic property is backdrop-filter: blur(...). This blurs everything located behind the element rather than the element’s own text or contents:
-webkit-backdrop-filter: blur(16px); /* Safari support */
backdrop-filter: blur(16px);
3. Glass Sheen Border
In the real world, glass reflects light sharply along its cut edges. A 1px translucent white border simulates this edge refraction:
border: 1px solid rgba(255, 255, 255, 0.2);
4. Diffuse Ambient Drop Shadow
A subtle, wide shadow separates the frosted pane from background imagery:
box-shadow: 0 8px 32px 0 rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.37);
Complete Production CSS Example
.glass-panel {
background: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0.1);
-webkit-backdrop-filter: blur(16px) saturate(180%);
backdrop-filter: blur(16px) saturate(180%);
border: 1px solid rgba(255, 255, 255, 0.2);
border-radius: 1rem;
box-shadow: 0 8px 32px 0 rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.3);
}
(Tip: saturate(180%) prevents background colors from looking dull or washed out under heavy blur!)
Glassmorphism in Tailwind CSS
Tailwind CSS has first-class built-in support for backdrop filters:
<nav class="bg-white/10 backdrop-blur-md backdrop-saturate-150 border border-white/20 rounded-2xl shadow-lg p-6">
<h2 class="text-white font-bold text-lg">Frosted Navigation</h2>
</nav>
